Hi, I've joined this forum having first of all viewed videos posted by ppotty1 on youtube, I was seriously impressed with his work and the obvious honesty and integrity of his presentations.
I live in the Scottish Highlands with access to a good supply of my own timber. I presently have an open fire but in recent years I have been looking to replace it with a more efficient wood burning stove. My problem is that my house is highly insulated so my space heat requirement is low and I have yet to find a wood burning stove that will meet my requirements. I'm interested in the rocket stove concept, whether it will provide a solution to my dilemma remains to be seen, but hopefully it should be enjoyable trying to find out and learning from others in the process.

from what ive seen of the canada homes they are well insulated more than the uks and they are using rocket burners or variations of the rocket burner with central heating

your design would need an inlet and outlet of clean new air

ppottys and zerofuels use this method of drawing air from the outside to run the rocket burner

further more it also depends on what you are wanting to use the rocket burner for

cooking
heating
hot water
some like the look of a coal fire

you quote space heat requirement is low so are you just needing a heater to warm one room up or the whole house up

In response I would confirm that I have inlet air from outside through a 110mm diameter pipe and I have a traditional blockwork chimney unknown dia but probably 175mm to 225mm.
My eventual requirements would be for whole house heating (oil at present), hot water to existing radiators, and domestic hot water from a storage cylinder as with my existing open fire.
My wife loves our existing open fire but I want to do things more efficiently and reduce the amount of timber we burn. So I would need a glass window in the firebox that would approximate to our 500mm square fire opening. This is why we have never been able to select an appropriate wood burning stove, I reckon the heat requirement in our lounge is around 2-3kw but to achieve the flame effect of our open fire would require a wood burner of 8 - 12kw.
Lastly my existing oil boiler is 12- 16kw and is capable of providing heating and hot water adequately.

shes not the only one with the love of the look of the open fire

but i like both versions the cost effectiveness and also the the look of the open fire whats best is that you can have both and also the requirements to do so much more with the extra technologys out there

for what i can tell you is the old systems run at 45,000 btu on the old essa systems i believe in my eyes that we have now come so far forward with the systems that we are now clocking way past that

garys, ppottys and greens are all powerful machines and can clock way more than the old systems

yet that is my opinion all it takes is others to further the tech and improve it all the time

I had stuffed my turbo rocket stove into my fireplace last winter and heated a well insulated 300 square foot living space with no problem using sticks that were 2"X"X8" in length and only four or five at a time.

Would be good know your square footage of space you will want to heat.

ppotty1's is a good way to go if you do not want to have to tend a fire every hour.

Most typical rocket stoves you will have to become a slave to every thirty to forty five minutes, some have gotten an hour burn time.

welcome axoz and thanks, plenty of options in rockets for a glass front or you could build a super efficient gassing wood burner.
