My name is James Hookway. I live in Sheffield UK.
I have been using rocket stoves to make charcoal for the last 3 years. You can see my video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBYaP5K0AkE. I have made several charcoal retorts using rockets stoves not all have worked.
I have been working with the University of Sheffield on some ideas of how to make a rocket stove which has a long bottom section and distributes the heat before going up the chimney, so if you want info on that please get back to me. I also have another video of a long rocket stove on my channel.
I have had some ideas for the rockets stove forge which I will post soon.
Thanks to everyone who set up this forum and everyone who is contributing

This looks very promising James, would very much like to know how you set this up.
I am wondering if it is possible to take what you have done here and apply this idea to a gassifer that produces gas to run combustion engines.

it is very simple as it seals the wood in a barrel and the wood gas is fed back into the rocket stove.
I made a much larger one, but the moisture content of the wood being made into charcoal was so great it took a day just to dry out! It did produce a huge quantity of wood gas. There maybe another way although by using too much of the wood gas you would have to stoke the fire for much longer.
I have tried to upload a picture of it without success.

i looked a little further and this one creates more than just one charcoal production also good set up via piping the gases for other things music at first is loud thoe

Yes, this is a good system. Although controlling it will be tricky as the moisture content of wood varies. Unfortunately there is no second video showing the drying system.
Personally I would not be interested in producing the tars as I have no use for them.

Hi James and welcome, really like your charcoal retort, have built several of these over the years to produce charcoal, although never with a rocket in the centre. Liking the idea of the gas production as a bi product opens up alot of ideas for future builds.
If its ok I will move your retort into the stove section.
