1910 Lodge and Shipley lathe

I just picked this up, it is a 22" Lodge and Shipley lathe from the 1910 era.
It as well came with five bucket loads of tooling and extras.

The lathe came with three chucks, two smaller ones that are about eight to ten inches in diameter, one a four finger chuck and one a three finger chuck and as well as you will see in the photo a 22" diameter four finger chuck.

The lathe was still in operational condition and even still today are noted for their accuracy and are still in use by many who like to restore antique trains and cars and trucks.

You can do the largest of jobs right down to the smallest of jobs.

Just to transfer this eight thousand pound behemoth was no light job.

Things went fairly smooth with the exception of a couple of glitches which we had to work out due to load balance on the trailer.

As many of you know, I am a poor boy and first and foremost could not even afford to pay anyone to move this monster.
A good buddy of mine when I told him about it offered to transport it and place it in my rented workshop space for free.

How about that, good friends are hard to come by these days eh?

Especially those who can move such a massive piece of machinery.

The magnificent time pieces are not only a high precision machine but as well can take off massive amounts of material in one pass.

It looks like it is a three phase and already has the phase converter set up will know in a few days once I make sure everything is cleaned up and oiled up and ready to go.

More to come as I progress on a light restoration, cleaning, paint removal and a re-paint and fresh grease and oil.
So how much did this poor boy pay for the behemoth?

Ya I am not going to watch it gadily.
I saw that on youtube and chose not to watch it.
I am very familiar with industrial machinery and appreciate your concern about safety.

This is not my first massive piece of machinery.

I am guessing this fella is leaning over the work as the machine is powered.

Incredibly stupid.

Not much out there on how to run and maintenance the machine.

no he dosnt lean over the machine its down to carelessness but also gives a warning about not wearing overalls or loose clothing

the lathe does get him dont think it dosnt

due to his carelessness by over stretching over the lathes cross cut thingy his loose top gets caught ripping it off his back and twisting on his arm

so yes it is an accident

if he had of had on overalls he would have been pulled into the spinning head of the machine the top in one way saved him

i know there dangerous and i play around with some dangerous machinery every day the lathe has to be one of the worst ones grinders are bad enough and so are pillar drills

Hey caotropheus as well they gave me a power hack saw just like the one you have.
I gave it to my friend for transporting my lathe.

As well they gave us a very big sheet of aluminum and two very large argon tanks.

the 4 chucks are the most expensive ones like the big chuck just make sure the damn thing is level hence the link i gave you and also run in the oil slowly once you have checked and oiled everything up as this helps to oil all the machine up
most people go straight to the high speed but this is not the case with old machinery as it needs a run in just like a new car does

I hope your argon tanks arnt like ours we try to take them back and get a refil on them they take the tanks off of us and you have to make an account with them before you can take a tank with you

if i had one of them id be using it on something else than return the thing for them to take it off of me

so if your lucky they are full tanks of argon inside them then you have a right bargain there even at half tank each its still a bargain

the big sheet id use a splash back or find something else for its use if using it for ducting to the wood burner of cold air it could have its uses

Thanks gadily for all the tips, I looked over the machine really good and not a spot of rust on it anywhere.

Someone kept it oiled up the entire machine including the chucks.

I plan on spraying some carb cleaner in the oil cups just to make sure they are clear before adding any oil.

Would hate to put oil in them and have one of them to be clogged up.
Will be working on it today.

T2H   How did that Lodge and Shipley lathe work out for you? I was a bit concerned when you said you were going to spray carb cleaner down the oil cups.Seeing the date of post says too late, but you seem savvy enough to have blown the carb cleaner out. I used to run a 21" Warner Swasey. I'm trying to think what parts of a RS you could  make with it. Perhaps a conical cast iron riser. You would  only need about a thousand pound roll of cast. I said that in jest but thinking on a smaller scale????? Did you find that there was runout in the ways. This was the case with the W/S, but it was easily remedied by tapping the in/out crank as you turned every couple of inches of feed. Sounds Mickey Mouse but the O.D. would come out within .001 in two feet if you knew your machine.Blah,blah, sorry to go on. Seriously would like to know what you made with it.

Thanks for asking, I wound up selling it for five hundred bucks.
I did not want the liability in the advent we had to move and not have the funds to move it.

its part of reason i got smaller at least you could move with it than having to get a big wagon every time id rather move a lathe by car trailer if it comes to that at a push

also seams to hold there prices much better than the big machines
