PostSubject: Cheap Stainless from IKEA   Tue Sep 02, 2014 12:05 pm

The wife and I went to IKEA today. As I strolled through the kitchenware department, it struck me how much cheap stainless steel there was, preformed into possibly useful this-and-that bits. For instance, these cabinet legs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30045144/ I found a set in their scratch-and-dent section for 25% off ($15). They're sturdy, and have nice little brackets already welded to the top.

Here's a trivet made of thin-wall tubular stainless: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30111087/
I can't decide if it's useful for anything yet or not, but you can't make something like that for $7 worth of time and materials. Well, maybe not. At any rate, it's probably a wash, and having something pre-made like that can be a boon.

Another item in the "might be useful" category is this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30011832/?query=ORDNING+Flatware+caddy It's probably too thin to use as a burn basket, but it sure looked like it could be useful given an opportunity. Still thinking on that one, too.

At any rate, make a pilgrimage to your nearest IKEA and have a look around, particularly poking around in their scratch-n-dent section. Often times they'll have bags of miscellaneous fasteners, including stainless screws, brackets, etc. Random bag, $5. Some of their fasteners are pretty nifty. You can get them at the hardware store, but it's usually $5 for half a dozen. With luck, a grab bag of fasteners will get you that, plus a bunch more stuff for the same price.

Cheers.

J.D.

JD I have been collecting stainless steel bowls, pots and pans that I have been buying up from local thrift stores.

I am planning building a wood stove, as well a gassifier out of them.

I've seen several gasifier builds based on SS bowls. Gasifier grates don't get as hot as the core of a rocket stove, so they should stand up pretty well in that environment.

What sort of gasifier are you planning to build? And what are you going to run with the gas?

Good one... JD..I found 6 scrap light fixtures about 30 years ago and needed some hoods for my drop lighting and ended up buying stainless steel bowls for this house I was rebuilding..drilled a hole in center and hung them upside down. I stopped by a couple years ago (a friend that now owns the home) and they were still hanging there..lol..I like; used, refurbished, recycled, or free....nothing wrong with free. Still, to have good quality metal to use in building your stove, you have to pay the cost sometimes...let the Flea Market Gods be with you when you don't have to. Last week, I looked up a sheet of 309, 1/2 inch SS, and decided I'd better buy a newer vehicle or some new underware.

JD I plan on using ss steel finds from thrift stores to build a gassifier to run my generator.

Also I have been buying much larger stainless steel items off of craigslist for a much larger gassifier to run my truck.
I thought I would get to building it this summer but it is not looking that way for now.

The one for my generator will come first, have to have it, it is costing me way too much money to run it on gasoline, as that is my only power source for fabricating my stoves.

I am looking for thin metal grates. I will have to check out the thrift store. Good idea.

Ebay is a good place to look as well.

I picked up a thin perforated stainless steel pastry cooking pan for pennies on the dollar.

I probably would work good for a pellet basket.

I will be making a video soon on all the stainless steel I have gathered up at the thrift stores.

Will be fun to see if I can build a gassifier out of them as well I plan on trying to build a wood stove out of one, a small compact one.

Also look at your local restaurant equipment supplier. A lot of restaurant gear is stainless, and most suppliers have a large stock of used stuff they'll sell for next to nothing, primarily because they got it for next to nothing when some restaurant went under.
