Wood gas isn't complicated... pass wood smoke through a red/white hot bed of coals in a very limited oxygen environment... this will make wood gas, which is mostly hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and some methane... there is nitrogen and some co2 and water vapour as well.
I wouldn't recommend building a fema unit... they are known to make tars and i have proven this to myself in my first build. There are much better units that can be built with not much more work. And, no matter what anyone says, you can not filter tar easily.
