spent brewers malt as a fuel Empty
PostSubject: spent brewers malt as a fuel   spent brewers malt as a fuel EmptyFri Apr 18, 2014 4:07 pm

New FDA regulations of spent brewers grain lead me to ask whether the spent grain could be used as a fuel. Apparently some have been using this waste byproduct as a biomass fuel. A few brewers use this byproduct to generate heat for their operations.

Any homebrewers on this forum? Could this spent malt be extruded into logs or pellets? Is this material sticky enough to clump and hold a shape after it has dried? A microbrewery can produce hundreds of pounds of spent brewers grain each day.

Here is an example. A brewery uses the spent grain as a bio mass fuel

There is a new FDA regulation that restricts the use of spent grain as a food source for livestock, which has been a popular secondary use for this material. A local brewery might give away this free fuel if you can build a stove that uses it. The heat potential of spent grain with a low moisture content is about 5,000 BTU per pound, but removing the moisture can be a problem. If you have a place to spread out the wet drain the sun can dry it. Grain can be shaped into bricks, sort of a beer granola.

we toss it out, birds will peck at it. so they don't want drunk cows eh?

Most of the protein and sugars are out of the spent grain, not real tasty.

Drying will take some time, like any weed. I don't see wanting to store all that, rotate it, and rotate it. to dry.

the best way to dry them is within an industrial dryer using the drum the heat from a rocket burner top inside of the drum will dry them out very quickly and the rotating of the drum adds to this

the old way of spreading out and moving them is too big hence why the drum approach is much better

a dual drum one for the heat to dry them another drum to cool them down you can see this method used when cooling down the pellets after they are made
