PostSubject: Box Rocket/Pocket Rocket Tent Stove   Mon Dec 15, 2014 1:48 am

I simply took Pekka Leskela's box rocket design and put it into a 5 gallon bucket.  This is just a prototype to see if if would work, and of course it does.  The photos are after my first run with it, which shows the 4" chimney.  Yesterday I put a reducer on it to take it to a 3" chimney and I also drilled some holes into outer wall of the second chamber to let some secondary air in... I'm not sure that was a good idea.  It still worked with the 3" chimney but it was definitely better with the 4", much stronger draw.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

Nice improvisation. Two things we have learnt here: 1st better to use bigger diameter chimneys (up until a upper limit, of course); 2nd, you need to heat up secondary air before you insert it into the combustion...

Thanks, but I'm afraid I haven't learned my lesson just yet. I'm going to cover the secondary air holes and my some new ones closer to the bottom, I think they were too far away from the flames to work. I played a lot with single and double wall paint can cooking stoves and found that there wasn't much of a difference, I assume b/c the air didn't have much time to heat up. So I'll move these lower and see if they kick in like I expect, if they don't then I'm not sure if I'll give up on secondary air or look for an easy way to heat it. Either way, we're having fun.
