Wood stove newb here, but know my way around a welder and a grinder.  My wife and I just bought our first house, and there is a huge fireplace in the unfinished basement.  When I was a young lad, dad had a woodstove in the basement and kept the thing choochin' all day and night.  So.. following in his footsteps I planned to do the same, but being an engineer I always try and do things different because I can.  I'm a youtuber, and came across ppotty's channel and instantly sold to his rocket stove.  I plan on building one in the near future.  I have the wife on board, just need to find materials.

Here is what I'm afraid of:
1. Running the stove pipe up the chimney will lose to much heat for the trouble.  I don't have room to run piping in the room like ppotty1 has in his shop.
2. The burn box won't be big enough to hold enough wood to burn for several hours during night time.
3. The heat will cause a steel build rocket stove to deteriorate quickly.
4. I will screw up a dimension or something and it won't draft.

I'm excited to join, hope this wasn't to long of a post.

Thanks,

Dave

Welcome to the forum

My suggestions to tackle this issue are:
1. Explore the forum, there are several ideas on how to get a bigger haul of wood that will burn for many hours
2. Use air controls for primary and secondary air and use a chimney dumper and you will be able to prolong the burning period of your wood.

Just build a stove and show us the result...

hi and welcome to the forums

ive built a few but have no idea how long they will last hell i aint had the chance to install it as of yet only done tests and a firing of the stoves

as you quoted its down to materials what maybe good in one case may not be in another exploring the forums may throw other ideas and then its just down to cost in your build

the other thing you have to consider is your weight of a build a rocket burner can weigh over 44kgs something smaller could weigh just 30kgs and produce a good amount of heat

as what i will say the new systems use secondary air so considering this within your build is worth considering

as for chimney any chimney needs checking for leaks to do this you need to purchase a smoke match or smoke bomb for testing chimneys if you see any smoke anywhere within your building including loft spaces and very little out your chimney then you need to install a liner down your chimney

rocket burners have very little heat going up inside of a chimney 100f too 150f

everyone makes mistakes its easy done but we can sort them out when needed therefore making them better or worse than before its the fun of building your own burner

Fire bricks or ceramic lined horz and vert tubes with a steel structure.

I can get a night out of mine without issues.

Batch box if you like to load and walk away.

Hi Dave, Welcome to the board. Heat loss up the chimney as gadily said is not really a problem and if your putting the stove in the basement a bigger exchanger will remove more heat before it enters the flue that said the heat going up the chimney also warms the house to a degree.
I have got 4 plus hours from a single load and im hoping my latest stove will beat that. Its about air control combined with a large firebox more than anything.
The first thing to go on a rocket is usually the riser followed by the firebox you can get around the riser problem with stainless steel or refractory. The firebox protected with firebrick will last for years. The exchanger does not seem to suffer in use as long at the top is fairly thick steel or at least beefed up where the riser vents onto it.

Yes I had seen Gary's Stove, I think its great, but all that stainless would make my wallet hurt to much.   But I like that you mention potential problems being directly linked to proportions.  The riser tube and vortex effect are what create the initial draw it seems.  I am willing to bet the height of the riser, and cross sectional area of the burn chamber are directly proportional to having a good clean burn.  With more time it would be worth doing some tests.  Also like ppotty1 mentions, all about air control also.  I'm just trying to build mine with the correct(ish) proportions so I don't screw it up, and so it works!  I am going to do my best to copy ppotty's design, and possibly his current one with the cast riser.

ppotty1: I love your channel and await more videos.  I will be posting my wood stove build on youtube as well, and will be giving you the credit of the design.

Thanks again all for the comments and warm welcome, I look forward to learning and sharing with everyone.
