I am always looking for cheap or free sources for supplies and parts for my builds. Has anyone used the glass out of a residential oven? I recall that some of the self cleaning ovens would have high temperatures during the cleaning cycle. Would the glass be suitable for use on a rocket stove? If so there should be lots of free or very cheap glass at the appliance recyclers!

Wow, thrifty idea!
From what I know, here in the states they are good for around up to 900 F. So you probably would need to be mindful where you could use it.

Toasty,

Thanks for that input, i was not sure what heat they would take. I'm thinking it might be OK for a batch box door. I doubt it would get over 900 F. If it does crack at least the price was right!

if you do be aware of this happening if you use normal oven glass from an oven like i did

also i did try to cut it to make it smaller and you cant cut oven glass like you can with woodstove glass

Gadily,

Thanks for the input. I have not built my batch box yet so I would try to find a glass of suitable size rather than trying to cut it.

Maybe the oven glass is tempered? I understand that tempered glass tends to shatter when trying to cut.

the glass is tempered on one side of the glass the heat side of it

im not saying it will do what my glass did but it could do so just be aware of it

i did cut mine but not all the way through before i gave up it could be why my glass did shatter but if you are using one then test it under all conditions before installing it

would it work with a batch box i dont think so but your welcome to try it it would be nice if it could do

i looked at the door size vs price when building my build for glass door

i also got some smaller ones for a bargain price thats why my dyno v uses one of them and i have another 2 more to use

I have noticed on u tube a lot of folks use washing machine glass for larger burners. Pyrex jug bases can be used if you cut them carefully with a grinder. Submersing in water will help reduce shattering ;-)

That reminds me of maybe 45 years ago when the owner of our local lumberyard showed Dad and I how to cut glass with tin snips...underwater in the bathroom sink! It looked like hell but didn't shatter.

Self clean ovens cycle at 500c, usually for 4 hours, the glass must be rated a good bit higher.
