I've lived with various wood stoves for years.
A couple of years ago I built a gasifying woodstove which is top lit, which reduces smoke on lighting.  It has an airtight hopper that is above the grate.  Wood is fed onto the grate and into the airflow where it burns.  The wood in the hopper wont burn as there is no airflow (oxygen) in this part of the stove.

To further clarify the stove has a glass door at the top of the burn tube. I stack wood in this side then twigs, then card, then shredded paper on top.
I light it on top and get little smoke from the stove as all the gasses given off from the fuel have to pass through the flames / embers where they are heated and combust more fully.

There is no fire underneath fuel - this is why fires smoke a lot when lit, fuel stacked up with paper underneath which is lit. Easier to light but creates lots of smoke.

A problem with this stove is the fuel has to be prepared carefully so that it feeds freely in the hopper. A different design of hopper, without a sloping side could overcome this.

Effectively Ppotty1s firebox is like a big wide hopper - the fact that the air flows in at the top means that potentially all fuel can set on fire.

I wonder about having a much taller box with air in at the bottom and move the glass down low ( because the part of the box above the airflow will fill with smoke and dirty the glass quick ) with the air flowing past it to keep it clean. Could set it up to allow you to see right down the feed tube

I like it, looks somewhat evil in the pic. How long is the burn fully loaded? From what I can tell it looks like a rocket burn.
