To further clarify the stove has a glass door at the top of the burn tube. I stack wood in this side then twigs, then card, then shredded paper on top.
I light it on top and get little smoke from the stove as all the gasses given off from the fuel have to pass through the flames / embers where they are heated and combust more fully.
There is no fire underneath fuel - this is why fires smoke a lot when lit, fuel stacked up with paper underneath which is lit. Easier to light but creates lots of smoke.
