PostSubject: Trying to heat a 5,000 sqft log home with my rocket stove   stove - Trying to heat a 5,000 sqft log home with my rocket stove EmptyMon Dec 07, 2015 6:03 am

I'm going to cast the horizontal fire box and riser tube in one piece. The primary, secondary and tertiary air tubes will be cast inside to help keep the air warm.

I'm trying to design it to use fire bricks made from sawdust for the fuel.(I have a local woodshop that makes them out of kiln dried hard wood saw dust).  This is my cheapest option second to firewood. The goal is also to have it self feeding like the guys using pellets.

Heat ex-changer is made out of 1/4" steel. It is an old roto-mold I made to make plastic tubs. It measure about 24"x24".

Riser tube has an ID of 6" and OD of 10"(quikrete tube from lowes.com)

Air tubes are made black iron pipe. Two 1-1/2" for primary, Two 3/4" for secondary(located at the intersection of the horizontal fire box and riser tube) and One 3/4" for tertiary(about 3/4 of the way up the riser tube)

I'm going to build a box around the heat ex-changer and run that into my existing duct work.

My refractory casting material is made local and is good up to 3,000 degrees F...

I will post drawings of my design if you guys want.

id suggest just doing the secondary burn chamber and the riser tube as all in one
and slot it onto some firebricks by jointing it to them as you can make sure its level then its the way im building my build as well

then have a second mold for the firebox as you can join them up together

quikrete you can get as low as 8" but no smaller as ive looked

firebricks are fired within a kiln I dont think we will hit those temps to cure firebrick properly

though you are right using sawdust within the molds as when they heat up they will burn away leaving air pockets as ive read about them

gary b has a good design for moving the air round the place you may want to take a look at his build as this maybe the way to go to move more hot air around the building

nice idea running it into your ducting system it should work but watch out for hot temps at the entrance of your ducting they might get a little hotter than what they are used too

Plibrico is a great company. I talked to 4 different people there and they were all great and very helpful.

The curing process for this material... get it up to 450 then increase 50 every hour for eight hours.

so in the end it has to get to 850d F

I'm using the 6" stove pipe in the pic for the inner mold of the riser tube.

Thanks for the info and suggestions!

Hear is what im thinking of trying in the bottom of the riser tube to create a double vortex.

im gonna say this keeping rocket burners at a set heat can be hard to do unless using gas

im all for you trying stuff out but if you want a heater to work wouldnt it be best to use one that does work then make a second one where you can test it before you install it

more so if your wanting this Trying to heat a 5,000 sqft log home

So your main concern is the horizontal section wont cure properly?

I do have a propane brush burner I could use to help manage the temps.

I like the design, especially the way you will form the double vortex.
Looking forward to the progress.
Thanks for sharing your ideas and work.

Thanks guys.

I have watched all of your(T2H) and ppotty1's videos. People like myself really appreciate the time invested in sharing research.

I kind of combined your idea of creating a focal point and ppotty's contour in the casting.

I have ton of research/work on heating with pellet stoves and using water to transfer heat to other rooms. I'm hoping the rocket stove will be my solution to have efficient and affordable heat.

you will find some info on a boiler from a rocket burner in the ideas section of the forums

at least another thats interested in the boiler approach as a few of us are after this system and at least we can put our heads together on this scope

looking nice there just watch out with your riser ive got the same problem how to get the center out without damaging it

as did ppotty with his center piece he let lucky as his had a slit on one side of it and was able to pull it apart by squeezing it in on itself

im hoping mine comes out easily but ive got a bit of spring on the guttering that ive used for the center piece

pinhead posted this rams head fire or a heart shaped fire pattern

They recommended coating the mold with Crisco. I'll try that and see how it goes.

Back in the day I was making shuttering on site and we used polystyrene blocks now and then for insets or peg holes the same can be used for inner riser moulds you can glue 3- 2 inch pieces up to make a 6 inch block round it with a knife and sander when your done casting acetone or paint thinners will dissolve it.

I decided to slope the top also. It has about an 1" drop.

Each side comes in about .75".

I left the bottom flat.

Has anybody every tried to reintroduce some of the exhaust back into the fire box?

Basically like an EGR on a car.

Also wonder if a wide band O2 sensor can be used to see if all of the fuel is being burned...

as the rocket design is based on as clean as combustable material it can be it quotes its highly efficent on burning alot of the material being used

1" is fine as mine dropped down however watch out for some blow back issues when starting as mine had it with my dyno v build

knute do you have a drawing of your finished product at all ?

as at moment im trying to figure out your build its looking good so far

the 2 air chambers so far are big enough but they are going to take up your refractory material and leave you with very little strength

may i ask if you can weld at all ? and have you got a welding machine

are you using the tertiary air method up the vortex tube if you are that top can be changed to a cap instead

Yes, I'm thinking I might need to change the form a little and add material around the primary tubes.

I do have welders and can weld. I wanted to build one a little different and if it performs well anybody will be able to build this one.

ppotty mentioned in one of his vids that a third source of air might improve the burn. I wanted to add this about 3/4 of the way up the riser tube and see if it helps(experimental).

All of the air pipes are threaded so they can be capped.
